Fun Facts
Equipped with large lungs, a powerful tail, flapper-like hind feet, and the thickest fur in the animal kingdom, the Sea Otter is well-suited for his coastal environment. Not only does his fur repel water, but his nose and small ears can close, making this small marine mammal virtually waterproof. Plus, he can hold his breath under water for up to 5 minutes! The Sea Otter is one of the few tool-using animals and can easily use a rock to open shells and dine on a variety of marine invertebrates, including Sea Urchins and crustaceans. Since this little guy needs to eat A LOT to stay warm, he helps keep the Sea Urchin population from getting to large, lending to a balanced ecosystem. Sadly, these unique features cannot protect Sea Otters from oil spills and poaching, which have taken a toll on their species. But fortunately, conservationists have recently had great success in restoring the number of Sea Otters, although they are still listed as an endangered species.
